journaling

i love making lists. writing notes to myself. making doodles. writing poems. and i love to look back through my journals to remember who i was and what life was like. my most favorite journals right now are the ones i kept in junior high. each day was crammed with multiple entries. notes on my bff’s, crushes, sports games, teachers and so on. they are such a fun and silly reminder of how simple and sweet life was.

these days i still love to journal (um, hello blog) though i don’t keep things all in one neat place. as i continue in my “doodle journal” i have felt compelled to start a couple new journals with the change in seasons. the first is a family journal. i dug out an old 3-ring binder, pulled some dividers, and labeled each one with photos of the person that section belongs to. within each person’s section is a page of images they cut from seed catalouges as well as a clear plastic page protector for storing special things. we’ve got room in there for photographs, drawings, notes, seed packets, bird feathers, pressed flowers and whatever else the kids decided to add.

since we spend so much of the year (march through november) thinking about and doing in the garden, it seemed only natural to document this part of our lives.  here is what we’ve started with:

The second journal is a doodle journal just for me. It’s just a moleskin (the BEST journal every!) that I covered with fabric. I saw the idea for the layout on some blog or website, but (sorry) I just can’t remember where it’s from.

Well, my journals, my daughter and I are off to visit Auntie YaYa for a weekend by the ocean…see you next week!

wishful wish list

not that there is anything i need…but it’s still fun to put together a list of things i dream of…

can we start with ANYTHING from here!

i also want to MAKE some of these. they are just so cute!

we’ll see…

have a great weekend!

cleared, clean and free

i don’t think (actually, i know) we havn’t waited this long to get a christmas tree EVER. but…with cris and i working at opposite times of the day, there is little time that we spend home together during the daylight hours. that said, we were finally able to get a tree! hooray! things keep getting busier and busier and the world seems to be spinning faster and faster. i know it happens as we get older, but it has still been such a surprise. i can’t believe that we are less than two weeks away from christmas. i can’t believe that my babies are going to be three and five years old. was i really pregnant for wyatt 6 years ago?!? isabelle will be in preschool and wyatt will be in kindergarden next year! cris and i have been together for close to a decade. the impending christmas deadline has really got me thinking…

feeling a little overwhelmed last night, i decided to do something i RARELY ever do: embark on a solo mission. the tree was trimmed, the kids were sleeping, and cris was doing research for a job. sure, i was only halfway done the dinner dishes and there was a fresh load of laundry that needed to be folded, but i NEEDED to get some weight off my chest.

so, i bundled up, strapped on my snowshoes and set out into the dark and silent world. the white snow, clear sky and bright moon absorbed the pressure i had let pile up. i circled around the barns, dropped down the hill between two rows of cedars, and broke out into the open fields. whenever i stopped to listen, i heard nothing. and it sounded so beautiful. an owl hooted. a coyote howled. the stream bubbled. i found a tree, sat down and just let myself be there. after a while, i got up to continue my loop. back home, i felt cleared, clean and free.
