6:12 a.m.

it is 6:12 a.m. and here’s what’s happening in our kitchen:

isabelle:  mom, put on some music please.

me:  okay

isabelle:  wyatt, do you want to dance with me?

wyatt:  you’re my little sister so i can do lots of things for you.

isabelle: okay wyatt (offers two hands)

(wyatt takes her hands, spirited dancing ensues)

(music ends. clapping begins)

isabelle:  that was lovely!

there is no editing here – they had me on the floor trying to hide my laughter (i didn’t want to distract them or make them self conscious).

i love when they love!

still obsessed

yes, we’re still obsessed with pirates here. couldn’t you tell by wyatt’s new hat? well, we found this book at the library:

we wanted to do all of the projects, but started out with these:

a treasure map, of course! wyatt decided on the elements he wanted and where they should go. then we colored together. using an brown paper shopping bag, we crinkled it a lot, tore the edges, and i did a little burning around the edges. wyatt wanted to roll it up and secure it with a tie, so we found a piece of bias tape from my stash and closed it up.

we also did this watercolor resist project with crayons and salt. you use this method to make the ocean and then add in a pirate ship, man overboard, and ocean life. we didn’t get that far, but wyatt really enjoyed seeing the paint pull away from the areas which were marked out in wax crayon.

we made this little drawstring pouch for pirate treasure and put some pennies inside. we also made this eye patch which has been worn A LOT around here.

what’s next on our list? wyatt wants to make the treasure chest, which is a major project. i’d like to finish the watercolor paintings. we’ll see…

the project

so here is the project i made with some of the treasures taken from my grandmother’s stash. i used a beautiful piece of white leather, some covered-button kit pieces, piping she saved from an old piece of furniture, a natural cotton for the lining, and some thread…

i used this pattern again, which is one of the best bag patterns i have ever used. it can be a little daunting at first, with all of the pieces and layers to cut, but it is SO worth the extra time it takes to organize it all. the bag is well designed, very functional, and perfect for use every day. i use the first one i made on a daily basis and think it is especially great to wear as a backpack when i take the kids into town and need two free hands. it can hold a few library books, a couple yards of fabric, or lunch leftovers from the bakery. (and, on occasion, it has been know to hold all of that at one time!)

i haven’t used it yet because i’m not sure if i should keep it or give it away as a christmas gift.
